Overview
Our classroom community strives to create a safe environment where students feel safe, secure, welcome, cared for and successful. Every student has a gift and I am committed to guiding your child to discover his/her individual gifts as well as helping him/her achieve success academically, socially, and emotionally.
In our classroom community, students will feel that they belong and have a sense of place. We celebrate our differences and ensure that we value and appreciate everyone in our classroom. We will be using bucket fillers in our classroom as positive reinforcements to celebrate our friends and everyone’s special talents.
Student Learning
When you enter our classroom you will see laughter, learning and lots of fun. Learning takes place through hands-on, manipulation, experimentation, discussion, group work and seat work. Feel free to join in the fun! My teaching style is a combination of direct instruction, followed by play-based learning and hands-on discovery. I enjoy integrating technology into our work and strive to create responsible and efficient digital citizens. I encourage students to work collaboratively to problem-solve and come up with a variety of solutions to a question. Our classroom promotes taking risks and growth mindset. We celebrate risk taking and successes every day!
Classroom expectations
We will be working on respect and responsibility and being true citizens. We will be using lots of positive reinforcements to encourage responsible and respectful behaviour. In most cases, when a child is not meeting these expectations, he or she can be redirected. Beyond redirection, other strategies include using creative consequences (such as a poster about proper behaviour), or a break from the classroom activity. Each year we create a classroom promise with our expectations in the classroom.
Communication from the classroom
We are a team in helping your child grow. I will contact you if there are any behavioural, academic or social concerns that need to be addressed. I will also contact you to celebrate your child’s successes! You can email me any time at [email protected]
Every month I will send an electronic newsletter to your email address including information and classroom events.
Please take a minute to join classtag! I will send out reminders and information through this app!
Communication from the school
Each month the school will send a newsletter home. The school website also includes information and student friendly sites. Check out our twitter feed for pictures and information about the fun things that are happening in our school. The school website is http://ejsm.wolfcreek.ab.ca
Connecting home and school
Please feel welcome to come in the class to learn, laugh and have fun! We love having helpers in our classroom. If you would like to come in and volunteer in our classroom just let me know what time works for you and we will set up a time.
Building relationships
Building relationships is essential in our grade 3 classroom. I will be working on building a relationship with your child so your child feels cared for. Friendships are important in students’ lives. Not only will we be working on maintaining and building stronger friendships with friends your child already has but also we will be encouraging your child to work with other students in class and creating new friendships. We talk about how our classroom community is like a family and we all care for each other. Every month we will have a classroom meeting where will discuss problems and celebrate friendships. When you enter our classroom you will see a classroom chain – our goal is to cooperate and work together to create a positive place where everyone feels like they belong.
Supporting your child's learning
Every night your child will be bringing a book home to read. As a class we will be working on choosing good fit books. I will be supporting your child to choose a book that is not too easy and not too difficult. The book should also interest him/her. Throughout the year we will be working on reading strategies and comprehension. Please encourage your child to use his/her strategies and ask questions after about the story. If your child is reading a chapter book that is fantastic, just try and have him/her a chapter or two every night. As a family, continue doing all of the fun things you do, such as playing board and card games. Mental math is extremely important as we continue to grow in our numeracy skills. We will be learning fun games in class. Ask your child to teach you some of the games that they have learned in class and include them in your family game night.
Assessment
We will be creating a portfolio to include samples and evidence of your child’s work. Throughout the year there will be portfolio walks (November and March) that will allow your child to show you all of the exciting work he or she has done in the classroom as well as demonstrate their growth. We also will be uploading documents and pictures onto SeeSaw (an online portfolio). Look for an invite to view this in September/October and feel free to comment. At the end of the year your child will receive a final report card outlining their achievements as it relates to the curriculum outcomes.
Curriculum Outcomes
We will be using “I CAN” statements when learning material in class. “I CAN” statements are the curriculum outcomes in student friendly language. As a class we will be coming up with “SO THAT” statements in class. These statements will reflect why we are learning this material as a life skill. For more information about the grade three curriculum and related resources, please visit the Alberta Education Parent Page at http://education.alberta.ca/parents.aspx Also check out the new curriculum and resources at https://curriculum.learnalberta.ca/ciihub/en/home
Special Events/Food
Throughout the year we have lots of special events in class, such as holidays and birthdays. If you wish to send a special snack for a special event just let me know. We do have some students with specific dietary restrictions so please let me know so I can ensure that all students can enjoy a special snack. We encourage our students to choose healthy snacks. Please help them choose a healthy snack to pack in their lunch for morning snack.
